Alex Winters

Clinical Psychologist

Alex Winters is a registered clinical psychologist working in private practice and community mental health. Alex’s professional journey began with a role working with individuals and families living with autism spectrum disorder while he was at university over 10 years ag. Since then, Alex’s journey has seen him work in various roles, and to gain valuable experiences working with people across the lifespan, and across the spectrum of mental health issues.
Alex works primarily with adults and offers a depth-oriented approach to a broad range of psychological difficulties. He is known for his warm, grounded, and collaborative style, creating a therapeutic space where clients feel both safe and supported to explore their internal world in pursuit of meaningful, lasting change.
Alex brings a wealth of experience from both public and private settings, supporting individuals facing acute, complex, and long-standing mental health concerns. His clinical work has included helping people navigate severe psychological, emotional, and behavioural difficulties, often in moments of significant life challenge.
Alex’s primary therapeutic modality is Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), a powerful treatment model that works by helping people understand, in the here-and-now, underlying emotional conflicts, strengthening a person’s capacity for resilience, self-understanding, and connection. He also draws on principles from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and behavioural therapy, allowing him to tailor his approach to each person’s unique needs and goals.
Alex is especially interested in working with individuals who have struggled to find relief through traditional therapy approaches, including those with long-standing personality patterns or difficulties in relationships. He emphasises uncovering and addressing the root causes of distress rather than focusing solely on surface-level symptoms, supporting clients to achieve enduring growth.
He is committed to providing inclusive and affirming care for people of all cultural backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations. Above all, Alex holds a deep respect for the courage it takes to begin therapy and believes strongly in each person’s potential for healing, transformation, and a more fulfilling life.
