A GP can provide a GP Mental Health Care Plan that allows you to claim a rebate from Medicare for up to ten sessions each calendar year i.e. you can access up to ten Medicare rebates between 1 January and 31 December in any one calendar year.
The Medicare rebate is $126.50 per session with a Clinical Psychologist and $86.15 per session with a General Psychologist.
Some private health funds also require a GP referral.
If you want a third party, such as Workcover, TAC or your employer to pay for sessions, you need to obtain their permission.
