What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts among family members. It recognises that families are interconnected systems therefore, what is faced by one member can impact the entire family unit. The goal of family therapy is to promote understanding, empathy, and collaboration within the family, leading to healthier relationships and improved mental well-being for all family members. By addressing underlying issues and patterns of interaction, family therapy can help families navigate challenging circumstances, strengthen their bond, and build resilience in the face of adversity.

During our Family Therapy sessions, our therapists create a compassionate space where family members can freely express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. We believe that by acknowledging and validating each person’s feelings, we can foster a sense of understanding, empathy, and connection within the family. Our goal is to empower families to navigate difficulties together, strengthening their relationships and building resilience in the face of adversity.

What Does a Family Therapist Do?

Family therapists help families work through and overcome challenges by supporting empathic and open dialogue between members, help the family group become more inclusive of the needs of individual members, build collabration amongst members to support problem solving and decision making, and support the development of skills and resources the family group can utilise to strengthen their relationships and goals for the future.

How can a Family Therapist help?

Working together as a family not just as individuals or couples can offer ways of addressing common issues that can affect all family members not just individuals. Four common family challenges that family therapy can assist with are:

1. Managing life stressors and change both redictable and unpredictable change such as employment loss, moving, separation, leaving home, illness, traumatic events, or the birth of a new child can undermine support and care amongst family members.

2. Managing relationship issues. Changes in relationships amongst members can impact on the stability and functioning of the family unit, such as sibling conflicts, addition of step-parents and siblings, families increasing in size and responsibilities or reducing in size and members due to loss, leaving home or separation, and multi-generaltional relationship responsibilities such as caring for grandparents. As relationships, members and individual changes, the family units can suffer.

3. Managing special needs. Mental and general health issues impact on individuals and families as a group such as child developmental challenges, acute and chronic mental and physical illness and disabilities care issues. Family therapists encourage shared care and support amongst members where possible.

4. Parent-child issues are common challenges that can arise within families, impacting the overall family.  These issues can include, parenting skill issues, communication and difficult behaviours, age & developmental milestone issues, school refusal, mental health and developmental conditions such as ADHD and Autism Spectrum issues.

When should you seek help?

Family life is filled with ups and downs, and it is natural to face challenges along the way. However, there are certain signs that indicate when a family should seek professional help. Recognizing these signs and reaching out for support can make a significant difference in resolving issues and maintaining healthy relationships. Some common signs include growing intolerance of different perspectives, family members stop talking or unable to have a conversation with-out arguing, repetitive arguments that don’t seem to go anywhere or solve issues, arguing, bullying, coersive or aggressive behaviour that appears to be worsening, unforeseen crises events, difficult behaviours such as abuse, self-harm and isolation and withdrawal from family members.
