A referral is not needed to make an appointment with our therapists, however, if you would
like to receive Medicare rebates under the Better Access Initiative, you will need a Mental

Steps to obtaining a referral and using a Mental Health Treatment Plan
- Make an appointment with your GP requesting a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). (Book an appointment with your GP ASAP as GP appointments are currently in high demand).
- Bring the MHTP and referral letter with you to your appointment at Dynamic Psychotherapy. Alternatively, you may also request for your GP to have this faxed to 03 7036 6867 or emailed to [email protected] prior to your appointment.
- After 6 sessions return to your GP to request a Mental Health Treatment Plan Review
- Bring the MHTP-Review with to your next appointment to claim another 4 Medicare rebates.
- A maximum of 10 sessions can be claimed within a calendar year.
- For us to process a Medicare rebate after your appointment, the referral letter needs to be dated for before, or the day of your appointment.
What sessions can be claimed under the MHTP
Medicare rebates can be claimed under the MHTP for appointments with both our general and clinical psychologists.
How many sessions are you able to claim under the Mental Health Treatment Plan?
Your MHTP permits you to receive rebates for 10 appointments within a calendar year. If you have not used all 10 sessions within the year, the remainder do not carry across to the new year, meaning you can only claim a maximum of 10 rebates per calendar year. However you can continue using the existing MHTP into the new year.
What is a MHTP Review?
After an initial 6 sessions you will need to return to your GP to request a Mental Health Treatment Plan Review to access the remaining 4 rebates. Without the MHTP Review, you will not be able to continue claiming rebates for your sessions.
Already have an existing referral?
You can continue using an existing MHTP with Dynamic Psychotherapy providing you have not exhausted the remaining sessions on the plan. Please advise your psychologist or our reception team of how many sessions have been used or remain, so together you can keep track of how many rebates are left to claim and/or when you need to return to your GP for a review.
Checking the number of sessions on your MHTP
To check the number of sessions used on your MHTP, or how many sessions you have claimed within the current calendar year, log onto MyGov and click through to Medicare. Under the ‘History and statements’ tab, click ‘Medicare claims history’. This will show you all of your processed claims with your therapist.
