She is a warm and empathic therapist who works with individuals experiencing a range of emotional issues and has a particular interest in working with first responders experiencing PTSD, with people experiencing pain and other physical conditions that are emotionally-based, and depression.

In 1994, Julie began practising short-term dynamic psychotherapy based upon David Malan’s teachings.   She discovered ISTDP and Dr Habib Davanloo’s teachings in 1996, becoming Australia’s first practitioner of ISTDP.   She went on to become a certified teacher and supervisor of ISTDP, making repeated trips to Stockholm to complete a three-year Core Training in ISTDP, a three-year Advanced Training in ISTDP, and a 3.5 year ISTDP Teacher Training course.   She has trained therapists from Australia, New Zealand, India, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Malaysia, Portugal, and Thailand, in ISTDP, is currently running a number of Core Trainings, and co-runs Advanced Trainings with Jon Frederickson MSW.
Julie is recognised as an ISTDP therapist, and as a teacher and supervisor of ISTDP, by The ISTDP Institute and by the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA).

“Julie Cochrane is that rare therapist who combines presence, empathic attunement and active engagement with highly refined skills designed to assess and treat a wide variety of patients effectively and efficiently.   In addition to her superb clinical skills, she is a talented teacher and supervisor.   With her extensive training in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, an empirically validated treatment for a wide variety of emotional and psychological disorders, she is at the forefront of the field.   Whether you are a  patient seeking treatment or a therapist searching for top notch training, you will be well served to contact Julie Cochrane.”
